Lasers for Microdissection

Laser capture microdissection (LCM), laser microdissection (LMD), or laser-assisted microdissection (LAM) is a method of sample preparation that enables isolation of specific cells from a microscopic region of tissue or organism.

The well established technique uses a laser beam to cut a predefined region of interest by the user. The focused laser beam (typically in the UV for minimal damage) follows this trajectory, cutting away the region. After the laser cutting process an extraction process isolates the sample for analysis.

In order to have a well-defined cut and not affect the target cells, the laser beam is tightly focused. Our Cobolt Tor Series Q-switched lasers at 355 nm offer a diffraction limited output allowing tight focusing compared with traditionally used Nitrogen gas lasers. Pulse repetition frequencies up to 7 kHz allow for fast scanning and the short pulse widths result in high peak powers of around 3 kW, making them attractive for microdissection applications.
